As a part of its mission to preserve and develop the maritime cultural heritage and to increase people's knowledge about it, Swedish National Maritime and Transport Museums, SMTM, assess the cultural-historical value of ships and leisure boats, lists culturally and historically interesting ships and offers economical subsidies to owners of historically valuable ships.

Preserving older ships that are still in use is a complex and expensive business. The Swedish National Maritime Museums offers economical subsidies to owners of historically valuable ships. The subsidies are intended to stimulate the preservation of the cultural-historical elements of these ships.
