The Swedish National Maritime and Transport Museums, SMTM, provides advice and support to regional and local museums, societies, organizations and individuals who work with maritime and transport history and cultural heritage.
SMTM strives to enable meetings and discussions with authorities as well as non-profit and commercial actors in the maritime and transport history area about common challenges and opportunities.
In cooperation with the museums support associations and other parts of civil society, SMTM supports non-profit museum operations and runs and participates in various forums around, among other things, historically valuable ships, train and railway history, shipbuilding historical associations, lighthouses, naval ships and its cultural heritage.
SMTM also assess the cultural-historical value of ships and leisure boats, lists culturally and historically interesting ships and offers economical subsidies to owners of historically valuable ships.
SMTM:s mission includes distributing financial support to a number of coastal defense museums, as well as getting involved in working life museums within subjects that are associated with SMTM's activities.
SMTM is also involved in research collaborations in the broad field of transport history.
